Why consider Grant funding in Scotland?

Grants can be a vital source of income for businesses. The main benefit is the provision of ‘free’ funding providing all associated conditions are met.  This can be a valuable source of finance for businesses to fund specific Projects.  A grant application will also provide a direct contact to public sector organisations which can provide a raft of advantages, including:

  • Being informed of other relevant Grants and other non-financial assistance; and
  • Enhanced visibility via Government agency marketing.
  • Potential exposure to complementary businesses via the grant body’s established networks.

What to know about grant funding in Scotland.

The grants landscape in Scotland and the UK is changing to a narrower focus with, understandably, more emphasis on innovation and sustainability.  However, allied to these new grant funds, the release of existing grant offers which have already been secured has been vital to the ongoing well-being of a large part of Scotland’s economy – particularly so during the turbulent last 2 years. We witnessed the flexibility and willingness of Government agencies to help applicants as much as possible during the initial COVID period. French Duncan were able to successfully negotiate early grant pay-outs and the restructuring of payment schedules to provide clients with much needed cashflow during this difficult time.

The French Duncan Corporate Advisory Grants Team provide comprehensive advice on both grant applications and certifications.  For most grants there will be a requirement for a Qualified Independent Accountant to certify eligible expenditure.  This is where French Duncan can help.  The Grants Team are specialists in providing grant certification services. Through years of experience, we have built up an extensive knowledge of the eligibility criteria and we have a network within the grant bodies to ensure that the process is completed as efficiently as possible.

Some grant certifications can involve instalments of more than £1m, others can be as low as £25,000.  Over the 5 years to 31 December 2021, we certified more than 230 grant instalments relating to eligible grant costs of £220m, releasing grant instalments of more than £38m for our clients.

Our work has increasingly been within sectors involving significant innovation over the period, however we certified instalments under grant schemes such as:

  • Innovate UK Grants;

  • Scottish Enterprise Grants
    • Regional Selective Assistance;
    • Research & Development;
    • Collaborative Grants;
    • Aid for Disadvantaged Workers;
    • Training Aid
  • European Horizon 2020 Grants;
