Legal Sector & Partnerships

Legal sector, Law firms, LLPs and Partnerships

As an accountancy and business services practice, we work closely with lawyers and legal professionals every day of the week, however at French Duncan we also provide a number of law firms, legal companies and individual or self-employed lawyers with accountancy and tax advice.  We also have a number of other LLP and Partnerships clients in other sectors too, who benefit from the expert advice of our accountants and professional advisors of issues specific to Partnerships.

How we can help you
With a significant number of clients operating within the legal sector, we have the experience and expertise to help lawyers and legal firms with advice on a range of issues, including compliance, assurance, VAT, corporation tax and personal tax.

Our smaller clients who don't have the need for a full-time finance function, regularly access the full range of our financial and business advice to provide them with the strategic overview and day-to-day financial management they need. Our Entrepreneurial Services Department (ESD) can help with the preparation of management accounts (which many clients find provide useful insights to business performance and efficiency), year-end accounts, the implementation of accounting systems and they can advise regarding bookkeeping processes.  We can also advise if a full statutory audit is required and our Audit Department can provide this, and in conjunction with our Tax teams, ESD could also advise on structure models (traditional partnership, LLP or limited company).

Our Personal Tax team work with many Partners in legal firms as well as QCs - managing their tax affairs and often working closely with our Wealth Management team to provide tax-efficient pension and saving advice. This team also work closely with legal firms who don’t have in house specialist tax support, to assist their clients with ad hoc tax advice and compliance such as Capital Gains Tax (CGT), to include 30 day CGT property returns, Inheritance tax, to include reporting to HMRC, share valuations and trusts and estates. Our Personal Tax team can assist with all aspects of HMRC reporting and compliance in these areas and provide ad hoc advice where required.

Our VAT advisory department can provide assistance with a wide range of issues including VAT liability and tax point issues, partial exemption reviews and full VAT health checks.

Our Corporate Advisory Department can offer strategic advice regarding the acquisition, merger and disposal of businesses.

All of our teams are also fully up-to-date with the relevant Law Society rules and regulations, and ensure clients are aware of best practice whether that be around Partnership Agreements, Accounting Controls, Management Accounts or Partner Statements.

John has been a Partner in French Duncan since 2005 following its merger with O’Sullivan Cleary, where he had worked since 2000. Prior to then, John was Manager of the Business Services group in the Glasgow office of Grant Thornton.

John delivers accountancy, taxation and other business advisory services to clients ranging from private individuals to companies with seven plus figure turnovers over a diverse range of sectors including the third sector.

In his role as an Entrepreneurial Services partner, John looks beyond the client’s business to help the owner/managers with their financial affairs. This is done during the lifetime of the business; when the owner/managers are preparing to exit the business and; when planning for life after business. Helping clients is largely based around dealing with accounting and tax compliance. Value is added through management reporting and other advisory services which businesses without any in-house financial expertise need either when starting up; growing and developing or; trying to maintain financial stability in recessionary times.
