Michael initially trained with a small firm in Edinburgh where he gained valuable insight into the personal tax compliance process. From there he spent a short time with BDO in Birmingham, before broadening his advisory experience at a regional firm in Shropshire for four years. Michael then spent three years at Grant Thornton, splitting his time between Birmingham and Glasgow advising high net worth individuals and business owners.
Michael has over 10 years’ experience in providing both personal tax advisory and compliance services to a range of individuals from the self-employed to partners in professional partnerships, owner-managers and the independently wealthy across a range of sectors.
Michael’s main areas of expertise include, but are not limited to:
- Advising individuals and business owners on tax planning strategies from start-up to exit to maximise reliefs across Capital Gains Tax (CGT) (i.e. Business Asset Disposal Relief, Investors Relief, EIS/SEIS), Inheritance Tax (IHT) (i.e. Business Property Relief) and Corporation Tax;
- Advising on tax efficient mechanisms to achieve: business restructurings, extraction methods, shareholder disputes, exit and succession planning;
- Advising on tax efficient ownership structures to optimise and protect intergenerational family wealth; and
- Advising on residency and non-UK domiciled matters.
Michael’s passion is building strong relationships with his clients and working collaboratively with their advisers to deliver proactive, solution lead, commercially driven outcomes to help them achieve their medium to long term objectives throughout the business cycle.
