Quarriers: Audit

Quarriers: Audit

"They have been much more than just auditors...”

Background

Quarriers is one of Scotland’s leading social care charities, supporting adults and children with a physical or learning disability, and families facing poverty, family breakdown and disadvantage.

The charity was established to help orphaned and destitute children in Glasgow in the early 1870s and currently provides over 100 services across the country from Moray and Aberdeenshire to Dumfries and Galloway.

What We Did

Since 2017 French Duncan has acted as external auditors reporting on the annual accounts of the charity and its subsidiary companies. As part of the audit planning process we discuss the audit scope with the audit committee and agree where appropriate any specific areas requiring additional focus.

We attend the charity’s regular audit committee meetings and contribute to the discussion where appropriate as part of maintaining strong governance procedures within the charity.

In addition to our audit services, we assist with the preparation and submission of annual tax returns to HMRC, ensuring compliance with regulations. The charity can have confidence in meeting its reporting requirements for accounts and tax to ensure it remains fully compliant.

Impact We Had

We have continued to provide a robust annual audit, challenging management and reporting to the Trustees and Directors within the timescales for charitable companies. As with all our audit clients, we provide reassurance that the statutory reporting and accounts disclosures are fully compliant.

As part of our standard audit process, we have highlighted any areas for improvement to enhance efficient operation of the business. In addition, we have:

  • Reviewed governance procedures in line with sector best practice and reported findings to the audit committee.
  • Reviewed and reported on fraud prevention procedures and controls against current best practice and guidance, providing the charity with peace of mind.

We have also provided added value services to the charity by assessing and reporting on compliance with National Minimum Wage regulations in relation to sleep-over payments following recent court rulings.

Director of Finance & Corporate Services, Niall MacPherson said:

“Having French Duncan as our auditors gives us total confidence that we are fully compliant with financial legislation, meaning we can focus on running the charity. They have been much more than just auditors over the years and have provided us with numerous valuable suggestions which we have taken on board. We continue to benefit from French Duncan’s expertise in the charity sector and we are very satisfied with the relationship we have developed with them."
