How we helped CodeClan bridge the digital skills gap.
CodeClan is Scotland’s digital skills academy, offering a range of immersive and short courses to help bridge the digital skills gap. CodeClan has bases in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness, and employs around 50 full time and part-time staff.
What we did
Having been referred to French Duncan by an existing client of the firm, our HR Services team began working with CodeClan in December 2017. Already growing at an impressive rate, and with a large demand from potential students wishing to join, CodeClan's challenge was to scale the staffing, structures and HR processes of the business, to ensure they could deliver even more first-class and award-winning courses.
French Duncan's specialist HR team initially undertook a thorough HR Health Check for the business. This process considers current HR documentation, processes and practices, whilst making recommendations, including a prioritisation timeline for any additional work required. The review considers both current employment legislation and HR best practice.
Since the Health Check was undertaken, we have continued to work closely with CodeClan to review their contracts and employee handbooks, reviewed the systems and processes to ensure these are aligned with the organisation's values and brand, and provided on-going training and support materials to line managers across the business.
From June 2018, our Payroll department has also managed all of CodeClan’s employee Payroll activities. This specialist French Duncan team lessen the burden by taking on this time-consuming task, but also assisted CodeClan abide by all the new legislation around GDPR, taxation and auto-enrolment.
Impact we had
Since the first cohort of students started with CodeClan in October 2015, the organisation has seen enormous success - and in spite of recent business and economic challenges due to COVID-19, they have met their goal of delivering 1,000 graduates into the tech industry across Scotland and beyond by 2020.
